Owner of the livestock business Casa el Cuarto (Mieldes, Asturias)

A cattle farmer and a businesswoman, years ago Amelia became aware of the need for a livestock facility with respect for its surroundings and its animals.

Her parents-in-law's six cows were passed on to her when they retired. That was when her life as a cattle farmer began. A difficult profession in those times, "and even more so if you were a woman", Amelia recalls.

When the time came to consolidate holdings, Amelia and her husband decided to buy some land. They did not invest in a byre, but rather in hectares. This means a free cow, a more peaceful cow, with fodder nearby, fertilising the land directly.

In 2008 they moved into environment-friendly production. Focusing on animal welfare, sustainability and respect for the environment produced better meat. And this is the line they are following now at Casa el Cuarto.

Their cows are the "Asturiana de los Valles" variety. They have the IGP stamp (Protected Geographical Identification of the Principality of) and are also certified by COPAE (Ecological Agricultural Production Council).
